Upper Columbia United Tribes
The Upper Columbia United Tribes (UCUT) recognize that our culture, fish, water, wildlife and habitat are essential resources of vital concern to our people. Tribal governance and management of these resources are essential components of our unique and sovereign status as Native Americans. Therefore, the protection, preservation, enforcement and enhancement of these rights and resources is crucial for present and future generations to come.
Five Tribes...One Goal
Collectively, the Coeur d' Alene Tribe, Colville Confederated Tribes, Kalispel Tribe, Kootenai Tribe of Idaho and the Spokane Indian Tribe intend to accomplish these tasks and issues for the benefit of not only Indian people, but all people of the Upper Columbia River Basin.
UCUT acts as a coordinating body and forum to express, communicate and resolve common issues and concerns as well as provide process to reach a mutually agreeable position to determine a course of action acceptable to the member tribes.
This cooperative effort acts as an advocate to facilitate a unified and effective communication with federal, state and local agencies as well as other tribes.
Taking Charge
Unified representation is provided concerning resource protection, enhancement and mitigation in support of each tribe's sovereignty and establishes an effective voice in Columbia River Basin management on a government-to-government
basis, thereby ensuring that all member tribal interests are recognized, adhered to and enforced when necessary.
UCUT is governed by a commission which is comprised of an appointed commissioner and one alternate from the five Upper Columbia United Tribes. This commission is empowered to formulate programs designed to promote and
coordinate the effective management, conservation, enhancement and
enforcement practices of the tribes. UCUT is proactively formed to assure a healthy future for the traditional territorial lands of our ancestors.
